Grubsta Slide Out Kitchen

One of the first things I wanted in my van aside from the essentials…bikes, coffee machine…was cooking facilities.

I started off using my old toy trunk from when I was a kid (another story) and an old camping twin stove we’d used a few times before.

It was functional but not quite what I wanted…

I was lucky in that my lashing points had been left in place when the new floor went in. With the help of a friend who could weld, we designed up some very simple brackets to simply bolt in. To these we attached some heavy duty sliders and a framed drawer to hold the trunk.

Bingo! slide out kitchen!

Thing was, this trunk deserved better treatment (project in pipeline) and I bought an old metal tool trunk off Facebook. I’ll be honest, it stunk of death…. Like something had been buried in it….

Two weeks airing later and smell resolved. A good clean down and disinfect and a pre-grubsta structure was taking form. False shelf, essentials parked underneath, what could go wrong? Nothing… but… it wasn’t good enough. I couldn’t get to the things under the cooker while I was using it.

Started researching mechanisms and movement.

Who knew what was available? Start simple I thought!

It was time to do this properly. Off to the sandblasters the box went. Bought a new cadac grill as the old one really had seen better days too.
