Reisen : The ultimate VW Transporter Day Van Camper Conversion

The ultimate VW Transporter Day Van Camper Conversion, that’s quite a mouthful. There’s a reason, this is Reisen by Dubsta. Seeking out the ultimate layout for luxurious, safe, comfortable travel, with options to sleep has been the task of Dubsta since the brand’s inception.

Why not the generic campervan set up?

There are problems with traditional camper set ups that, in our opinion, restrict the usage of the van.

  • Narrow / uncomfortable / expensive space hogging beds
  • Compromised storage
  • Unsuited to daily use needs

What did we do?

  • Decided we wanted a daily setup to carry 5 adults safely
  • Chose some luxurious seats
  • Designed and fabricated the necessary seat bases to utilise standard OEM mounting points
  • Reconfigured a folding bed and storage system to satisfy everyday needs and camping in comfort.

The result: Reisen

Why we think this is the ultimate dayvan conversion is easy.

  • Eat up those long journeys with maximum comfort for 5 adults.
    • That’s thanks to luxurious leather electric Porsche Cayenne seats front and rear.
  • Increased space for rear passengers making the cabin more roomy, as well as making access easier.
  • All your belongings are easily accessible thanks to optimal use of cavities and 2 huge drawers at the back.
  • Sleep in comfort thanks to a full width fold down bed. It’s simple and easy to set up with just 4 catches. Stowing away is just as easy..
  • Finally, you can still fit full size 2400 sheets in if you fold the bed down.

It’s no joke that we think this is the ultimate dayvan conversion for a VW Transporter. The complete flexibility combined with world class comfort is going to be hard to beat for anyone who uses their transporter daily for social, leisure and business.

Safety first

As Reisen utilises Factory floor mountings, you can be completely assured that the floor mounts have been rigorously tested during OEM development.

The front bases utilise heavy grade steel and mounting of seats to bases is via factory specification bolts.

The rear seat bases, designed in-house at Dubsta utilises heavy 40×40 box section steel and triangular forms to optimise strength. Floor bolts are increased size over OEM specification. Mounting of seats to the frame is with OEM specification bolts.

Utilising the standard OEM factory seatbelts in the C-pillars makes the rear 3 seats completely safe for transporting passengers in all 3 positions.

Comforting news

Space is again optimised inside with the use of a swivel on the passenger seat base. By simply lifting a lever and rotating the seat it’ll turn a full 180 to provide you a comfortable social space in the cabin.

Thanks to the angular design of the rear seat base, masses of extra leg room is generated whilst also still ensuring rear passengers are comfortably seated between the axles.

Extra versatility is provided in the rear with the sliding rails the seats sit on, enabling rear passengers to sit further forward. The seats also fold to provide full load length in the rear.

The icing on the cake for us is the combination of the Reisen Bed System in the rear. Taking advantage of the folding seats this bed system provides a full width sleeping option and the flexibility to specify drawers and storage systems underneath.

What’s the point in Reisen?

Reisen means travel and that’s what we think campers are for. Traveling means spending a long while on your seats What we want from our camper van is:

  • Comfort, luxury, refinement
  • Best use of space
  • Flexible storage maximising

Ok, perspective on this. When I bought my first transporter, like most of you I was over the moon to finally have my hands on the vehicle to go adventuring and touring. Very quickly we decided the 2+1 setup needed to go. It’s not that comfy for the driver and passengers it’s not nice at all on long journeys. We also wanted to be able to take passengers with us safely and comfortably.

Up front, the obvious go to is a single passenger seat. You’re looking at £1000 before you start. Then you have the fun of trying to find one in the same material. This then leads you to consider retrimming. Retrimming your standard VW Transporter seats is an option but ultimately, they’re still original seats and your pocket will feel a fair weight lighter.

This wasn’t a route I wanted to go down. Looking around you can get some fantastic seats for similar money to the option above. I also really didn’t want a rock n roll bed in the back.

After trying a few options, I decided to go with the Porsche Cayenne seats. Using lowered seat bases that are then modified to suit the wide proportions of the Porsche Cayenne seat runners, the fronts sit lower than standard seats making the driving position more car like. All the electric movement functions are made operational with simple wiring as well.

Part of why i chose the Cayenne interior is the rears fold and they slide back and forward. As you would expect in a Porsche Cayenne, the rear is very comfortable and refined. Making them fit was a bit more challenging. I knew where the standard seat mounting points are. I chose to use these because they’re tried and tested. Combined with standard VW floor reinforcement brackets, the Reisen rear seat base is going nowhere. The seats are perfect height for everyone to feel they are at the right height in the vehicle with plenty of headroom. The rear passengers also have the comfort bonus of being between the front and rear axles. If you didn’t know, the ride in the rear if sat over the rear axle is pretty bad. Now let’s talk about leg room.

This is where Reisen differs from Combi or traditional camper set ups. It does use factory floor mounting positions and seatbelt points giving all the ticks for safety. Reisen’s rear seat base is set around 200mm further back than standard combi seats. It may not sound like a lot but when you compare, the space is enormous. Another benefit of the sliding rear seats is that if you do have people in the rear who need to be closer to the front seats, a simple pull handle and you can slide the seats accordingly. They get better too. The retracting central armrest has two working cupholders. The rear seats also fold forward in a 2+1 split. Finally, being Porsche, the centre folds independently as well. Now there’s the benefit of them folding.

With folding rear seats, the option to have a bed is realised and by utilising heavy duty drawer runners and a bit of careful planning, every bit of spare space is made accessible and usable.

After 10 days touring Europe with my good lady wife I can safely confirm, we didn’t feel the need for a Hotel at all and found our setup supremely comfortable for munching up the miles as well as being so versatile, pitching up and packing away was a painless task. Hard to believe right?
